Actually SEPTA has had one called 'Trip Planner' for some time.

Unfortunately, the New York Hop Stop gives coordinates for crosstown buses in Manhattan that a tourist could master in a day or two but it doesn't even attempt the more complicated bus systems in the other boroughs.
The first website to introduce outer borough coverage will instantly become a NYC treasure.

Thank you Preston, great link! I look forward to the day when all cities, NYC included, have something like SEPTA's Trip Planner. In my hometown, our only source of trip planning is still a route map, or assistance from a phone operator--if we are lucky to get through on the invariably busy line. Harumph!

The Gothenburg public transport company has been running for a couple of years a very nice journey planner. It is at http://vasttrafik.se .
But of course, Gothenburg is nothing as complex as London or New York.
