Preserving the Past
Conservation technicians at the National Museum of Natural History take great care in preserving artifacts, maps and drawings. See this link for pictures of some beautifully-preserved maps and artwork in the National Anthropological Archives.

don't forget that this is the same museum of natural history that used to have "dioramas" of anthrolpological interest...with real indigenous people from the northwest in the scenes. living there. in the museum. and one of the directors, Ackley was a prominant eugenicist and held the second international congress of eugenics at the museum in 1921. in 1923 the US passed immigration restrictions from certain nations, and many states had long been involuntarily sterilizing those deemed "mentally deficient" or incorrigible." hmmmm....
