Looking for a Walkable Community

This thread on Metafilter invites neighborhood/city suggestions for a returning, previously-expat American. This person is looking for "a small, walkable, thriving community without too much sprawl." Any additional suggestions here?

My suggestion would be to send this thread to every sprawl loving planner and show them the demand for urbanism...

I think the problem with that, George, is that all of them would say, "Oh, well, in that case we need to protect our small-town feel by preventing all development in the town, because our town is like that just the way it is, and we wouldn't want it to turn into a nasty big city!" Which, of course, would create exactly the kind of sprawl which scares people away.
